Different dress styles depend on different body measurements. Understanding which measurement matters most for each silhouette helps you choose the right size every time.

Bodycon / Fitted

Size by your largest measurement among bust, waist, and hips. The stretch fabric will conform, but an undersized garment will feel restrictive and create visible compression lines.

A-Line / Fit & Flare

Focus on your bust measurement. These dresses cinch at the waist and flare out, so hip size is less critical. A well-fitting bodice is the priority.

Empire Waist

Your bust measurement is the key sizing factor. The waistline sits just below the bust and the fabric flows freely, making waist and hip measurements secondary.

Sheath / Column

All three measurements matter equally. Sheath dresses follow the body's natural line without excess fabric, so balance between bust, waist, and hips determines the overall fit and drape.

How to Take Your Measurements

Bust

Wear a non-padded bra and wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust, across the nipple line. Keep the tape level all the way around and breathe normally. Do not pull it tight or let it sag.

Waist

Locate your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of your torso, typically about one inch above your belly button. Wrap the tape snugly around this point. Exhale naturally and take the reading without sucking in.

Hips

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks. This is usually about 7 to 9 inches below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the floor for an accurate reading.

Sizing tip: If your bust and hip measurements fall in different size ranges, choose the larger size for a comfortable fit and consider having the garment tailored at the waist. Most dresses are easier to take in than let out.
