Understanding Suit Fit Types
Beyond finding your chest size, the cut of a suit dramatically affects how it looks and feels. Modern menswear offers three primary fit categories.
Slim Fit
Narrow through the chest and waist with higher armholes and a tapered trouser leg. Best suited for lean or athletic builds. Expect about 2 to 3 inches of ease in the chest. The silhouette appears sharp and contemporary but can feel restrictive if you size incorrectly.
Regular / Classic Fit
The traditional cut with moderate room through the chest, waist, and thighs. Provides about 3 to 4 inches of ease and suits the widest range of body types. This fit is standard in business environments and offers all-day comfort for office wear and formal events.
Modern / Tailored Fit
A middle ground between slim and classic. Slightly shaped at the waist with a natural shoulder and medium-width trouser leg. Provides approximately 3 inches of ease. This is the most versatile option for men who want a polished look without the restriction of a slim cut.
How to Measure for a Suit
Chest
Stand relaxed with arms at your sides. Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your chest, directly under your armpits and across the shoulder blades. Do not puff out your chest or hold your breath.
Jacket Length
Short (S) fits men 5'5" to 5'7", Regular (R) fits 5'8" to 5'11", and Long (L) fits 6'0" and above. The jacket bottom should cover your seat and your thumb knuckle should align with the jacket hem when arms hang naturally.
Trouser Waist
Measure around your natural waistline where you typically wear your trousers, usually about two inches below the navel. The paired waist sizes in the chart assume a standard 6-inch drop from chest size.
Sleeve Length
Bend your elbow slightly and measure from the center back of your neck, across the shoulder, down the arm to your wrist bone. The shirt cuff should show about half an inch below the jacket sleeve.
Drop ratio: Standard suits use a 6-inch drop (chest minus waist). Athletic builds often need a 7-8 inch drop, while portly fits use a 4-inch drop. If your body does not match the standard drop, consider separates (buying jacket and trousers in different sizes).
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the S, R, or L after a suit size mean?
These letters indicate the jacket length. S (Short) is designed for men approximately 5'5" to 5'7", R (Regular) for 5'8" to 5'11", and L (Long) for 6'0" and taller. The chest measurement stays the same regardless of length. Choosing the correct length ensures the jacket covers your seat properly and the sleeves hit at the right point on your wrist.
How should a properly fitted suit jacket look?
The shoulder seam should sit right at the edge of your natural shoulder. The jacket should button without pulling or creating an X-shaped crease across the chest. You should be able to slide a fist between your chest and the buttoned jacket. The back should lie flat without bunching, and the collar should sit flush against your shirt collar with no gap.
Are US and UK suit sizes the same?
Yes, US and UK suit sizes use the same numbering system based on chest measurements in inches. A size 40 in the US is the same as a 40 in the UK. However, EU and Italian sizes differ significantly. To convert, add 10 to the US/UK number: a US 40 corresponds to an EU/IT 50.
Should I buy a suit in my exact chest measurement or size up?
Buy the size closest to your actual chest measurement. Suits are constructed with built-in ease of about 3 to 4 inches beyond the labeled size. A labeled size 40 jacket actually measures about 43 to 44 inches around the chest. Sizing up will result in an overly boxy fit that is difficult to tailor down.
