How to Measure Your Hand for Gloves
Measure Hand Circumference
Wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your dominant hand, just below the knuckles (excluding the thumb). Make a loose fist while measuring to account for the stretch needed when gripping.
Measure Hand Length
For a secondary check, measure from the tip of your middle finger to the base of your palm where it meets the wrist. If your hand length gives a larger size than circumference, use the larger of the two.
Consider the Material
Leather gloves stretch and mold to your hand over time, so a snug fit is ideal. Knit and synthetic gloves have less give, so consider sizing up half a size if you are between sizes for these materials.
Sizing by Glove Type
Different glove materials and purposes call for slight sizing adjustments to get the best fit.
Leather Dress Gloves
Buy snug. Quality leather stretches half a size after a few wears and will mold to your hand shape. Unlined leather gloves provide the most refined fit.
Winter / Insulated Gloves
Size up by half a size. The insulation lining takes up interior space. You still need to grip zippers, car keys, and phone screens comfortably in cold weather.
Work / Utility Gloves
Prioritize dexterity and grip. A glove that is too large bunches at the fingertips and reduces fine motor control. Choose your exact size or half a size down for precision tasks.
Touchscreen Gloves
Fit is critical for touch accuracy. The fingertip must make full contact with the screen. Buy your exact size and test responsiveness before relying on them for daily phone use.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between men's and women's glove sizes?
Men's and women's gloves use the same numeric sizing based on hand circumference. However, women's hands tend to have a smaller circumference, so a women's Medium (7-7.5 inches) is smaller than a men's Medium (8.5-9 inches). The same numeric size fits the same hand regardless of the label, but letter sizes differ between men's and women's lines.
Should gloves fit tight or loose?
Gloves should fit snugly without restricting movement. You should be able to make a full fist and wiggle all fingers freely. Leather dress gloves should start snug as they will stretch after a few wears. Winter gloves can be slightly roomier to trap warm air, but too loose and they lose insulation and dexterity.
How do EU glove sizes work?
European glove sizes are based on hand circumference measured in French inches (slightly larger than standard inches). In practice, EU numeric glove sizes align closely with US/UK sizes. A size 8 glove in EU corresponds to an 8-inch hand circumference in the international system.
Do I measure my dominant or non-dominant hand?
Measure your dominant hand, as it is typically slightly larger due to more developed muscles. If the difference between hands is significant and you need a precise fit (such as for dress gloves), consider measuring both and using the larger measurement.
